Because in one way or another you only come across wanted things at unexpected moments and ditto places. And while it would be more convenient if it were the other way around, unexpected finds still have their charm. Wim Jorg van Petersen made an unexpected discovery.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peugeotvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/404-coupe-1966-1024x828.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3132\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Wim: &#8220;About a year and a half ago I was walking across a flea market in the Champagne region, when my attention was caught by an old can. It was on a stall with a messy mix of stuff. You know, everything is just nice and tasty. things that are often left in the dirt from years ago, things that are generally half broken, and for which the French flea dealers also want the top prize.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you point out the condition of your &#8220;find&#8221; to the traders, they often try to sell you the mix of dirt and wear and tear with the argument &#8220;il est dans son jus&#8221;. By that they mean that you have to appreciate it, that you can forgo the life that such a product has led to it. But my personal translation of this winged statement is: &#8220;I have been too miserable to remove the worst of the dirt myself.&#8221; But this aside.<\/p>\r\n<p>The can I had in mind turned out to be the same, and I wanted to put it back where it was, on some old magazines. I don&#8217;t know exactly why, but I picked up the magazines to have a look at them. Who can describe my surprise when I suddenly came across an old Peugeot brochure in the stack. And not just one, no, that of my two dream cars: the 404 convertible and coup\u00e9. So I had to have it.<\/p>\r\n<p>When I asked the trader for the price, I actually didn&#8217;t care what he would say. In any case, I was prepared for the worst. Fortunately, this brocanteur was less charmed by the brochure than I was, because to my great surprise he only asked for one euro. My day couldn&#8217;t go wrong!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peugeotvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/404_Coupe_1_0-1024x751.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3130\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Toen ik mijn vondst even verderop in het ochtendzonnetje eens goed ging bekijken zag ik dat het een brochure was van het modeljaar 1968. Naast een aantal mooie foto\u2019s van de Peugeot 404 cabriolet en de coup\u00e9 \u2013\u00a0met zelfs twee grote\u00a0foto\u2019s over een dubbele pagina \u2013\u00a0beschrijft de inhoud in summiere bewoordingen de uitrusting van beide modellen. Zo wordt de coup\u00e9 beschreven als een auto van grote klasse met elegante lijnen. Ook valt te lezen dat beide auto\u2019s veel luxe en comfort bieden en beschikken over briljante wegprestaties.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">De toekomstige eigenaar kon kiezen uit een carburatiemotor van 80 pk of een injectievariant van maar liefst 96 pk. Het is ook goed om te weten dat de auto\u2019s ten opzichte van het vorige modeljaar onder meer een nieuwe versnellingsbak en een nieuw stuur\u00a0hadden\u00a0gekregen. Zaken die eveneens het vermelden waard bleken te zijn voor de verwende automobilist van die tijd waren het afsluitbare dashboardkastje, de sigarettenaansteker, de elektrische klok, de achteruitkijkspiegel met\u00a0dag- en nachtstand en de twee zonnekleppen.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ook bij deze Peugeots werd de kleur van de stoffen bekleding afgestemd op die van de carrosserie. En bij de coup\u00e9 was,\u00a0in combinatie met sommige carrosseriekleuren,\u00a0op aanvraag ook een zwart kunstlederen interieur leverbaar, terwijl je bij de cabriolet bovendien echt leder kon bestellen. Over de voorstoelen vermeldt de brochure dat ze groot en comfortabel zijn en in vele standen versteld kunnen worden. En voor de overige passagiers\u00a0was\u00a0de ruime achterbank gemakkelijk toegankelijk via de grote deuren en de\u00a0naar voren klappende stoelen. Zat je eenmaal achterin,\u00a0dan trof je daar zelfs een opklapbare centrale armsteun aan die voorzien was van een asbak.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Voor de cabriolet bleek het noemenswaardig dat het dak eenvoudig te openen was en\u00a0dat\u00a0de kunststof achterruit een panoramische vorm\u00a0had\u00a0voor\u00a0\u2013\u00a0inderdaad\u00a0\u2013\u00a0optimaal zicht. Tot slot valt te lezen dat er op aanvraag een\u00a0(uiteraard afneembare)\u00a0hardtop\u00a0leverbaar was. Al met al niet heel veel informatie. Men ging er duidelijk van uit dat de foto\u2019s voor zich spraken. Op de achterzijde van de brochure staan nog wat maten en\u00a0cijfers en worden beide leverbare motoren wat uitgebreider beschreven.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Na het doornemen van deze vrij beknopte informatie was ik desondanks volkomen overtuigd van de kwaliteiten van beide modellen. Nu moest ik alleen nog even kiezen. Achterop stond een stempel van Paris Sud Auto concessionnaire Peugeot,\u00a0die de brochure in 1968 aan een ge\u00efnteresseerde klant had meegegeven. Graag was ik direct terug in de tijd gereisd om bij Paris Sud Auto een gloednieuwe Peugeot 404 coup\u00e9 te bestellen, want die leek me na wat wikken en wegen toch het mooist om te hebben. Maar ach, sommige dromen moeten dromen blijven.
