De auto was bedoeld om het gat tussen de 204 en de 404 op te vullen. Technisch was de auto verwant aan de 204, maar ontwerper Pininfarina gaf de auto een uiterlijk in de lijn van de 504 die het jaar ervoor gepresenteerd was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1970 kwamen de 304 Coup\u00e9 en Cabriolet op de markt ter vervanging van de 204 Coup\u00e9 en Cabriolet. De serie werd compleet gemaakt toen in 1971 de 304 Break ge\u00efntroduceerd werd. Vanaf maart 1979 stopte de productie van de 304 Berline; de 304 Break bleef geleverd naast de 305 sedan tot mei 1980.
