The Peugeot 403 Berline Sept, a model that made its mark on French roads in the early 1960s, combines driving comfort, reliability, and technical innovation. Building on the success of the Peugeot 203 and 403, this model was particularly distinguished by its tax-efficient 7 hp (CV) engine and its practicality for both business and family use.
Technology and Engine
Under the hood lies a 1,290 cm³ four-cylinder engine with an output of 54 hp SAE. This is a so-called “carrré” engine with a bore and stroke of 75 x 73 mm. The cylinder head is hemispherical in shape, with overhead valves and rocker arms, and a single camshaft. The engine is equipped with wet, interchangeable cylinder liners and a carburetor with antifreeze heater. A technical highlight is the automatic fan shutdown, an electromagnetic system that switches on at 84°C and switches off at 75°C. This offers clear advantages: higher power (up to 5-10 km/h more top speed), better fuel economy (0.4 to 1 liter per 100 km less), and a quieter ride.
Handling and Comfort
The 403 Sept is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh gears, including an “economical” fourth gear. The car has a robust monocoque steel body and is coated with synthetic polymer paint, resistant to high temperatures.
The front suspension is independent with a transverse coil spring and dual-effect hydraulic shock absorbers. At the rear, coil springs, an anti-roll bar, and telescopic shock absorbers provide additional comfort. The brakes are hydraulic, with brake assist.
The turning circle of just 4.75 m makes the car agile in city traffic. The rack-and-pinion steering ensures precise handling and excellent weight distribution across the axles (54% front, 46% rear).
Space and Interior
Inside, the Peugeot 403 Sept seats 5 to 6 people. Four spacious doors that open at a 90° angle ensure easy access. The front seat, as well as the backrest, are adjustable and feature central armrests. The dashboard features clear gauges, a centrally located ashtray, and controls for heating, ventilation, lights, and windshield wipers.
Performance and fuel consumption
Top speed: 125 km/h
Average fuel consumption: 8 to 9 liters/100 km
Range: More than 600 km on a full tank (but yes!)
Dimensions: length: 4.47 m – width: 1.66 m – front track: 1.34 m – rear track: 1.30 m
The Peugeot 403 Berline Sept is a classic example of French solidity and understated progressiveness. The combination of driving comfort, technical innovations like the automatic cooling fan, and the spacious interior make this model a popular car.
